Nic Reagan TS #1

Today I had my first tutoring session with Marcelle, an 8 year-old girl from Africa who attends Gilchrist Elementary School. She has already had some tutoring with FSU student Ceara. Ceara did the primary tutoring today as I observed to determine Marcelle's English proficiency.
We worked on a worksheet for her class entitled "My Mom: A Poem". The purpose was to fill in the blank using a word to complete the poem. For example: "My mom is as pretty as ____". We made a list of things Marcelle thinks are pretty on a small whiteboard (shirt, purple) and then we used this list to fill in the blanks on the worksheet. Marcelle has a tendency to say 'I don't know' quite a bit, so it was important to help her focus on finding words. Her understanding of conversational English is advanced beginner, but she does need help with reading, written English, and pronunciation.
The second activity involved a worksheet in which we added suffixes to change words. For example, "crazy + est =  craziest" and "slam + ed = slammed". We only completed a few of these because it was difficult to get Marcelle to focus on the task .
I look forward to helping Marcelle learn English in a fun way in our tutoring sessions!
