On Thursday, May 2nd, I conducted a tutoring session with Peiheng Li for 50 minutes. This should be considered an 'extra' session, as Peiheng has been assigned his own student for tutoring.
To conduct the session, I designed an Advanced Tutoring Assessment Questionnaire to find out more about Peiheng's proficiency and English-training needs. From my assessment and his feedback, I determined Peiheng does have advanced conversational proficiency in English, but that he could work on details of pronunciation, the use of idioms, and expanding his vocabulary beyond even his current advanced level.
The plan, had I continued to tutor Peiheng, would have been to treat the sessions as- essentially- Advanced Conversation Partner meetings, including cultural outings and discussions of topic-prompts and articles/literature. For example, in preparation for the second session, I gave Peiheng a sheet including the topic 'The Electoral College' and the poem 'To the Harbormaster' by American poet Frank O'Hara. I would have had him write summaries in the second session and we would have had a discussion on these topics, with a chance for him to improve speaking, vocabulary, and idiom comprehension.
Peiheng is a very intelligent and diligent student and his knowledge of English will take him far in whatever future endeavor he chooses.
