Today I had my first tutoring session with Samuel from Colombia. I used this time to determine his level of fluency utilizing the Advanced Questionnaire for English Tutoring. During our meeting, I learned very quickly that Samuel's fluency still needs significant development. He still has trouble understanding basic compound sentences in English and I found myself regularly having to repeat myself or rephrase questions and statements. That's okay. Samuel is at an early stage in his CIES education. It is clear we will work on a wide range of English skills, including conversational phrases, vocabulary, and grammar. He did make it clear in the Questionnaire that he especially wants more help in Speaking and Grammar- and this will be areas to focus on in our next sessions.
